Professor Jan Pearson's interest in becoming an artist as
a career began to develop when by age 11, he found a market
for his work among his classmates. Imagination, a sensitivity
to line and form, curiosity, innate craftsmanship and problem-solving
skills were clearly evident in all of his sculpture.
After a stint in the Navy, and a time of designing special tools and prototypes
for Smith Corona, Jan turned his attention to his desire to explore the creative
potential lurking in the labyrinth of his mind. In 1972, he made a tactical decision
that facilitated his artistic development. Seeking the lowest possible overhead,
Jan traded his sports car for a Ford van and gave up his apartment in Los Angeles
for life on the road. From
this time on, a major portion of all his earnings from the sale of his commissioned
art pieces was invested in new tools, untried materials, and techniques.
His cross explorations of various materials gave birth to an almost limitless
ability to execute sculpted shapes directly into any selected material. Most
notable is the way he works steel.
Jan was the proud receipient of the City
of Grants Certificate of Recognition for the creation
of the "Grants Hub of History" sculpture which received first
place for Public Improvement, from New Mexico.
Jan’s work has been recognized by the Accademia
Internazionale * Greci-Marino * Accademia Del Verbano and
has been awarded the official title of Professor Jan Pearson, Associated
Academician, Department: Arts.
